Asphalt Milling

Asphalt milling is the removal of old asphalt from driveways, parking lots, and others to be recycled and reused. Asphalt milling is cost-effective, eliminating the wastage of old asphalt.

Asphalt milling offers a better alternative to the asphalt replacement and reinforcement. You will need an expert to handle asphalt milling for your driveway and parking lot space.

What Does Asphalt Milling Mean?

Asphalt milling has been around for sometimes now traced back to the middle of the 1970s. Asphalt got damaged and need replacement or restoration after years and cost a fortune, but with the emergence of asphalt milling which offers an alternative to roads repaving, asphalt milling has made name for itself.

You have probably heard the term “asphalt milling” somewhere and you are unsure about its true meaning, asphalt milling is a means whereby you fix your damaged asphalt driveway or roads without having to do a total removal of your asphalt.

To mill asphalt means to remove a portion of damaged asphalt from an inch to the base of a pavement to restore its integrity. When the asphalt surface contains cracks, asphalt milling is used to grind the surface to the desired depth before it is being recycled and reused.

Asphalt milling is performed on roadways, bridges, driveways, and parking lots of space made of asphalt and you will still be able to maintain the former height or raise the height a little further.

What is Asphalt Milling Used For?

Asphalt milling has been used for different uses by different people; this section will show some of the important uses of asphalt milling:

  • Cheap restoration of pavement - Asphalt is damaged by the stress of heavy trunks and harsh weather effects on it over time which needs to be sorted out as soon as possible. In a situation whereby some parts of the asphalt are still intact and there is no need for full removal of the asphalt, a milling machine is used to remove the affected parts before pouring freshly prepared asphalt.

  • Recycling  - With asphalt milling asphalt recycling is possible for reuse which is cost-effective when compared to new asphalt; labor and transport costs are drastically reduced as well. Also, recycled asphalt has a high degree of durability and can withstand the harsh weather (snows and rainfall) better than new asphalt. It is important to note that recycled asphalt does not necessarily require the addition of a seal coating to the surface and still performs better in extreme climate conditions in contrast to new asphalt.

  • Maintaining the right height for driveways - The good thing about asphalt milling is that it helps to maintain the original height for asphalt driveways. It offers better outcomes compared to overlay where new asphalt is poured on old ones which makes the height to go up beyond normal. Asphalt milling eliminates the thought of driveways going out of shape with many overlays at different points on the surface which causes uneven leveling.

How Long Does Asphalt Milling Last?

The key to the life expectancy of asphalt milling depends on the installation, duration for the surface hardness, and traffic in the areas. In an average traffic flow, asphalt milling can last on average for about 25 years. The driveway must be well-graded with proper drainage to prevent the accumulation of water on the surface. The asphalt milling should not be large and not more than 2 inches by properly crushing it.

It is also necessary that the asphalt milling is well spread and compacted to ensure it is firm and hardened on the base layer. Provided all these are putting into consideration, you can expect your asphalt milling to last as described earlier but this may differ if the asphalt milling is not properly installed, subjected to heavy traffic, and in the absence of proper drainage.
